FOCUS: Do What You Say You'll Do
Disciplines: Personal Mastery, Systems Thinking

"The only possession we own that is worth anything is our word. Unfortunately, many people worry more about scratching their car than keeping their word." Douglas D. Chasick

THOUGHTS:

Trust is the basis for every successful relationship. This is true when the relationship is between
- boss and employee
- service provider and customer
- husband and wife
- parent and child
- friend and friend.

The absolutely best way to build trust is to do what you say you'll do. Or tell why not. Every time.

We worked with the CEO of the Canadian branch of a major U.S. company. People at all levels of the company held him in high esteem. Our assessment showed him to be highly analytical, not a natural people person. "How do you account for your stellar reputation?" I asked him. He answered simply, "I keep my word".

The problem is that we often don't pay attention to what we promise. We say, "I'll keep you updated every week," and we don't. We say, "I'll take care of it," and we don't. Or, "I'll call you next week," or "You'll have it by Tuesday," and it doesn't happen. We don't realize that we have broken our word.

COACHING TIPS:
1) Listen to yourself talk and make sure you can do what you say you will do.
2) Do it.
3) If you can't keep your word, acknowledge it. Apologize if you need to. Take responsibility.
4) Don't overpromise and underdeliver. It's better to underpromise and overdeliver.
5) These tips apply equally to communication with your boss, your 5-year-old, your partner and your best friend.

Chasick also says, "Oh, and by the way, your car is gonna get scratched no matter what you do - that's life!"
