Life is one big transition.
— Willie Stargell

Thoughts

I’ve just returned from a whirlwind trip to Wisconsin and California where I celebrated high school graduations with two grandchildren, Jessica and Mitchell. Major milestones! They are both looking forward to college and less regimentation. Their brothers and sisters can’t imagine homes without them.

The systems will surely be disrupted – new patterns and alliances and habits will emerge. The same thing happens in every family and organization when there is a transition.

My dad died last September, and our extended family is still figuring out how to gather, celebrate and spend time together without him. My friend Linsey and her husband had a baby, Amiel, in March. This kind of transition is huge. One wonders how a critter so small can have such an impact – in feelings, daily habits, self confidence. I know so many people in transition:

  • My niece, Ashley just got engaged.
  • A company I work with hired a new president.
  • Hal and I are getting old. We find ourselves happy to be helped to do things we used to do for ourselves.

So what do we know about transitions?

  • Transitions happen. They’re a natural, inevitable part of life.
  • Every transition impacts the systems that touch it.

Coaching Questions:

  1. What transitions can you embrace in your life now?

  2. How can you respond to rather than resist the changes?

  3. How can you help things go right in the systems affected by the transition?
